Herbert Wigwe, the late CEO of Access Holdings, was given a hero’s funeral. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, took to the platform to voice his disapproval of the applause that former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi received.

Political heavyweights and well-known individuals gathered at the Port Harcourt event, including Sim Fubara, the current governor, and past governors of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi and Nyesom Wike. Notable businessmen Aliko Dangote and governor of Abia State Alex Otti were also there.

After comparing his welcome to Peter Obi’s, Akpabio made some uncomfortable remarks that caused discord among the audience. His attempt to lighten the serious situation by asking others in attendance to comfort the “grieving widow” of the late Herbert Wigwe, who also perished alongside her husband amidst the sombre atmosphere only added to the unease.

The Anap Foundation’s President and Founder, Atedo Peterside, immediately denounced Akpabio’s remarks as “self-centered and insensitive,” emphasising the importance of decency and tact in public conversation, particularly at such serious occasions.

Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and their son Chizi, who unfortunately perished in a helicopter crash, said their final goodbyes at the funeral. The three were buried in Isiokpo, Rivers State, the place of their country home.
