Following shocking disclosures made by People’s Democratic Party senator Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe, who represents Cross-River North, in the Senate on Tuesday, tensions are running high.

During a Senate session, Senator Agom-Jarigbe revealed that ranking senators were allegedly paid a significant amount of N500 million apiece.

The information came to light during a debate on Senator Olamilekan Adeola’s resolution concerning Senator Ningi’s alleged breach of privilege.

Senator Adeola made a move of privilege to address the matter of national significance brought up by Senator Ningi’s interview with BBC Hausa, invoking orders 9, 10, 41, and 51.

Senator Ningi asserted in the interview that the Senate runs on two separate budgets, citing the 2024 budget’s approximately N3 trillion in missing money.

Nevertheless, a turbulent session resulted from Senator Agom-Jarigbe’s shocking disclosure of the purported N500 million allotment to ranking senators, which caused a fracas and disarray among the senators.

“We are going back and forth on this issue, coming up with issues of the budget and individual issues concerning what came to our various constituencies,” Senator Agom-Jarigbe cried out.

We are all responsible if we choose to discuss any of those topics. As a ranking senator, I received nothing; some of these so-called senior senators received N500 million apiece. Did I go to the media?

In an effort to calm things down after the disturbance, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) explained that the N500 million indicated was intended for constituency projects.
