A recently released report describes how the Nigerian government, led by Chief Bola Tinubu, approved the N2.5 billion purchase of deep freezers, generators, and other items for Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s constituency empowerment projects.

Prominent social media critic Mahdi Shehu shared a screenshot of the budget on the X platform, showing that the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs included five separate N500 million empowerment schemes for the people living in the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.

“N2.5BILLION APPROVED FOR AKPABIO TO BUY DEEP FREEZERS FOR HIS CONSTITUENCY: Wonders shall never end. Anyway, with Akpabio, anything and everything is possible, considering his past records, how he emerged as Senate president without being a candidate in an election. Disgusting,” Mahdi captioned the screenshot.

In the meantime, the Cross River North Senatorial District’s Senator Agom Jarigbe revealed on Tuesday that a few “senior” senators earned N500 million apiece from the 2024 budget.

During a Tuesday Senate session, Senator Jarigbe revealed this information amid controversy surrounding claims of budget padding made by Senator Abdul Ningi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and representative of Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

Ningi asserted that the National Assembly had approved a budget of N25 trillion for the fiscal year, and that the Senate leadership had inflated the 2024 budget by N3.7 trillion.

Senator Abdul Ningi was suspended as a result of the member pointing out the discrepancy between the authorised budget and the N28.7 trillion being implemented by the federal government.

The claims made by Senator Ningi incited popular indignation, drawing criticism from numerous Nigerians on Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
