A portion of the former deputy governor Philip Shaibu’s home has been dismantled by Edo State Public Works Volunteers.

The security station in front of Shaibu’s home was the focus of the demolition, which happened in GRA Benin-city.

Following Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly one week ago, this situation has transpired. There were apparently charges of perjury and government secret leaks that led to the impeachment.

Shaibu fiercely contested being impeached, claiming that he was being victimised for exercising his basic human rights, especially because he wanted to be his former boss’s successor.

Adjacent to the golf course, the security station functioned as a makeshift haven for Shaibu’s security detail and was a crucial component of the safety procedures before and after official activities.

Speaking anonymously in response to the destruction, a senior official from one of the participating agencies claimed that the security post was taken down because the former deputy governor was no longer eligible to hold such a position as a private citizen.

Eta Uzamere, the state commissioner for roads and bridges, refuted internet rumours that claimed his ministry was associated with the demolition and denied any role in it.

He said, “I have seen some online reports linking my ministry to the demolition of the former deputy governor’s security and I can tell you it had nothing to do with my ministry.”

An aide to Shaibu expressed dismay over the demolition, emphasizing that the security outpost was not constructed by the government but by Shaibu himself.

The aide criticized the state government’s actions stating, “As I am talking to you, they have destroyed Shaibu’s security outpost. The place was not built by the government, it was built by Shaibu himself. You can see how wicked the state government is.”
