Insisting that the federal government reconsider the age criteria for admission to postsecondary institutions in the nation, Education Minister Professor Tahir Mamman has questioned the registration of young teenagers in the ongoing Unified postsecondary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Speaking in Bwari, Abuja, soon after observing the exam’s administration, the minister reaffirmed that the age requirement of eighteen years old for university admissions remained in place. She also counselled parents against pressuring their minor children to pursue higher education, particularly university education.

The minister voiced dissatisfaction with certain applicants’ ages for the exam, pointing out that they are younger than those who should be applying to institutions.

Nonetheless, Professor Tahir praised the exam’s conduct, calling it tranquil, and noted that the noticeable abnormalities from earlier rounds had much decreased.
