Dr. Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged Christian leaders throughout the nation to remain impartial in election-related topics with less than six months until the 2023 general elections.
Okoh claimed that in order to keep the church itself apolitical, religious leaders must ensure that their flocks are informed, educated, and sensitive to election-related issues.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, the Christian leader delivered the warning in Onitsha last Sunday while addressing a crowd of Christians at the Grace of God Mission International’s founder Bishop Paul Nwachukwu’s 75th birthday celebration.

Speaking on election-related issues, Okoh asserted that the next election provides electorates with the best chance to pick the president of their choice through the voting booth.
He, however, observed that proper guidance is needed to ensure that citizens make the right decisions in the next presidential election.
Okoh expressed the belief that the Church has a great role to play in the emergence of the next President. He said: “The church should be non-partisan in election matters, it has a duty to ensure the people are properly guided in the choice of leaders they choose. If Nigerians can unite and forge a common front, the choice to turn around this country is in their hands.”
Speaking at the same event, Godwin Okeke, Senior Pastor of Destiny Revival Ministry International, chastised certain church leaders for endorsing politicians on their altars, stating that doing so just serves to unnecessarily inflame the political climate.

According to Okeke, the church should be non-partisan while also educating, sensitizing, and informing its members about election-related issues.
The pastor from America noted that in developed nations, churches only inform their members of the issues at hand and leave it to them to decide who to vote for in upcoming elections.
He therefore urged churches to refrain from endorsing candidates at the alter because this is not their function.
