Plans to create the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States, a new confederation, have been finalised by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The declaration was made on Friday after the foreign ministers of the three countries met in Niamey, the capital of Niger, according to AFP.

The finalisation of the draft language outlining the institutionalisation and operationalization of the AES has been announced by Bakary Sangare, the Foreign Minister of Niger.

“The objective was to finalise the draft text relating to the institutionalisation and operationalization of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States,” Sangare said.

“We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States has been born,” declared Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop.

The Heads of State of the three countries will formally adopt the text at an upcoming summit, although the exact date has not been specified.

Three member states recently left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) under Bola Tinubu’s leadership. Timi Frank, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), described this as a source of national shame and embarrassment for Nigeria in a statement.

The military administrations in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced last Sunday that they would be leaving ECOWAS immediately and joining the Alliance of Sahel States instead, according to DAILY POST.

Following coups in Niger (July 2023), Burkina Faso (2022), and Mali (2020), strained relations between the governments and ECOWAS intensified. Niger and Mali faced severe fines and suspension from ECOWAS, but the three nations did not waver.

Timi Frank Tells ECOWAS, EU, Others To Ask Tinubu To Resign

Frank chastised Tinubu for failing to find a peaceful solution to the long-standing problems, which led to Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali’s expulsion from the regional organisation. He made a comparison between Tinubu’s leadership and that of the earlier leaders, who were crucial in preserving harmony and stability in the subregion.

He said: “Since assuming office as President of Nigeria, Tinubu has demonstrated his lack of nuanced understanding of regional politics and empathy for poor and suffering Nigerians – his primary constituency.

“No man can give what he does not have. His poor leadership of the regional body has led to its ongoing disintegration just as it has brought untold hardship upon Nigerians.

“Whether Tinubu likes it or not, he met the 15-member regional group established about 49 years ago intact when he assumed the reins of leadership as chairman in July 2023. But history will record that things fell apart during his ineffectual, riderless and neglectful stewardship in less than seven months.

“Your inexperience and that of those handling the economy has destroyed our economy.

Given that they are still leaving Nigeria on a daily basis, investors are reluctant to enter the region.

“For instance, Tinubu met the exchange rate of Naira to Dollar at about N600 to a dollar but today it is about N1,500 to a dollar.

“Besides, his knee-jerk removal of fuel subsidy has further impoverished Nigerians with people finding it difficult to feed or afford skyrocketing transport fares.

“Above all, insecurity is on the increase with the nation’s capital – FCT – and other parts of the country rendered increasingly unsafe by incessant kidnappings and gruesome killings.”

Bolaji Akinyemi, a former minister of foreign affairs for Nigeria, has claimed that Russia was involved in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso’s decision to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) alliance.

The former minister claimed that Russia was giving the three countries more confidence to split apart ECOWAS during his Monday appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show.

According to Akinyemi, Russia is supporting the three countries’ efforts to split ECOWAS as part of its strategy to reduce the influence of the West on the continent.

“I see the hand of Russia in this, i think Russia is emboldening these three countries to breakup ECOWAS as part of the attempt to weaken the western influence in this part of the world, and yet Russia has not shown that it has the capability to help these three countries to combat the jihadist , the ISIS who are running wild in the sahel,” he said.

As previously reported by Anaedoonline.ng, on Sunday, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso jointly announced their decision to leave the West African grouping.

This occurred in the midst of growing hostilities between the three Sahelian countries and the regional union, especially after the military takeover in Niger.

Increased political tension in the area following the toppling of Niger’s democratically elected government prompted consideration of creating a counterforce against ECOWAS.

According to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), three of its members—Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have not yet formally announced their intention to leave the group.

The three nations, which are presently governed by military coups, have not formally notified the Commission, according to a statement released by the Commission on Sunday.

In addition, the Commission called for discussion and diplomacy to end the political impasse and reiterated its commitment to restore constitutional order and democracy in the impacted nations.

With 15 member states, ECOWAS was established in 1975 with the goal of advancing political stability and economic integration in West Africa.

Burkina Faso and Mali warned on Monday against military action in their coup-torn neighbor, Niger, saying it would equal to war in the West African region.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the warning was issued in a joint statement by the two countries, both of which are run by military-backed regimes, in response to a threat issued by West African leaders.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leadership threatened military action against Niger’s junta after the successful coup last week during an emergency meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.

ECOWAS handed the junta a seven-day deadline to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who is being kept captive, in a meeting presided over by its Chairman, President Bola Tinubu.

Angered by the threat, Burkina Faso and Mali issued a joint statement on Monday night that encouraged West African leaders to leave Niger alone, warning that any miscalculation would have “disastrous consequences.”

Part of the statement reads, “The transitional governments of Burkina Faso and Mali express their fraternal solidarity… to the people of Niger, who have decided with full responsibility to take their destiny in hand and assume the fullness of their sovereignty before history.

“Any military intervention against Niger would be tantamount to a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali.”

Burkina Faso announced a recruitment campaign for 5,000 soldiers to serve in the army for at least five years to help the government fight extremists.
Since 2015, the country, one of the poorest in the world, has been fighting a deadly insurgency.
“An unprecedented recruitment of 5,000 non-commissioned soldiers for the national armed forces, to serve for at least five years in their military zone of recruitment,” Defence Minister Colonel Major Kassoum Coulibaly said in a statement.

The minister stated that the recruitment of young male troops will take place from February 28 to March 7, and that enlistees must have been born between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 2003.

Of Burkina Faso’s 13 regions, those that are hotspots for violence will have higher quotas for recruitment — including the western Boucle du Mouhoun region and the Sahel in the north.

This is the third time in less than a year that the Burkinabe army has organised such a drive. In April 2022, 3,000 soldiers were recruited, with the process launched again in October.

In seven years, more than 1,000 civilians and soldiers have been killed, according to NGOs, and some two million people internally displaced.
