The Chinese government has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with African countries to reduce poverty on the continent. The Chinese Consul-General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, emphasized this during the 18th China-Africa lecture held at the University of Lagos.
Yan Yuqing assured that China’s collaboration with African nations was focused on addressing poverty-related challenges and categorically stated that China had not contributed to creating a debt crisis in African countries. She highlighted China’s active participation in the G20 initiative, where efforts were made to postpone debt repayments. China, she noted, had contributed more than 60% to these efforts, surpassing the contributions of other G-20 members.
During the lecture-themed “Chinese Modernisation and the Development of Africa,” the Consul-General emphasized the positive outcomes of the bilateral relationship between China and Nigeria. Key areas of success included infrastructure development, trade, and investment, as well as collaborations in education and culture.
Yan Yuqing expressed satisfaction with the progress in various fields, commending the hardworking and friendly nature of both Chinese and Nigerian people. The Consul-General also noted the increasing interest of students in learning Chinese, fostering cultural exchange, and providing opportunities for students to explore Chinese history and build friendships with Chinese counterparts.

The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, acknowledged the unique approach of Chinese society, describing it as “Chinese essentialism.” He pointed out the success of China’s socialist system, emphasizing the country’s transformation from poverty to a global superpower. Prof. Odukoya contrasted this with the capitalist system, asserting that socialism had proven more effective in uplifting societies.
In conclusion, the meeting aimed to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas across various academic disciplines. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Ilupeju, emphasized the potential benefits for students through academic exchanges and the opportunity for them to pursue programs in China. The event highlighted the ongoing collaboration and mutual understanding between China and African nations, emphasizing shared goals in poverty alleviation and development.
