Gunmen, believed to be herders, launched an attack on farmers in Plateau State, leaving four people injured. The incident occurred in the Bachi community of Riyom Local Government Area when the victims were working on their farms.
Solomon Mwantiri, President of the Berom Youths Moulders Association, confirmed the attack in Jos on Wednesday. He stated that the assault took place on Tuesday afternoon, and the injured victims have since been evacuated to a hospital where they are receiving treatment.
“At around 2 pm on August 6, 2024, a group of over 20 heavily armed Fulani herders attacked some natives of Lwa in Bachi District, Riyom LGA, who were farming in the Seheng area of the village,” Mwantiri reported. “As a result, four people sustained varying degrees of injuries, including one individual, Caleb Bachen, who suffered a fractured hand.”
Caleb Bachen, one of the victims, recounted his ordeal from his hospital bed. “I was at a different location from the other farmers when I heard them crying for help as gunfire erupted in the area,” he said. “I didn’t know what was happening. As I tried to run home, some of the attackers, armed with guns, machetes, and sticks, pursued and brutally assaulted me despite my pleas for mercy. I screamed for help, and a man named Saddau came to my rescue from the attackers, whose number I couldn’t determine but were more than 15. Other victims might know the exact number.”
Another victim shared that the farmers had previously obtained permission from the Fulani herders to cultivate their farms after years of being denied access. However, the herders began threatening them last week, warning that they would not be allowed to harvest their crops this year. “While we were on our farms, I saw over 20 armed Fulani who began shooting randomly and chasing us off the farmlands. Those with sticks beat and injured four of us, and some have been rushed for medical attention,” the victim added.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off when contacted for comment on the incident.
