Boko Haram terrorists have once again wrought havoc in the northeastern regions of Nigeria. This time, their attacks targeted the farming communities of Koshebe, Karakul, and Bulabulin in Borno state, resulting in a tragic loss of life and leaving many individuals missing.

At least nine farmers lost their lives in these attacks, with scores of others still unaccounted for. Most of the victims were hardworking rice farmers from the Zabarmari Ward of the Jere Council area. They had ventured into their fields to harvest their crops, an endeavor that should have been a source of sustenance for their families and communities.

Tragically, this is not the first time these rice fields have been marred by such violence. In November 2020, the same location was the scene of a brutal attack in which approximately 73 farmers were mercilessly killed, with numerous others disappearing without a trace.

Hon. Ahmed Satomi, a member representing Jere in the national assembly, expressed his concern over these renewed attacks, particularly targeting vulnerable farmers. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the deceased to find eternal peace.

What sets these recent attacks apart is the manner in which they were carried out. Instead of employing firearms, the assailants chose to use cutlasses and knives to harm their victims. This decision was likely made to avoid attracting the attention of nearby security operatives.

Tragically, these attacks are not isolated incidents. During the harvesting season, Boko Haram has intensified its efforts to terrorize and inflict harm on farmers in various regions, including Bama, Gwoza, Mafa, Konduga, Gamboru Ngala, Dikwa, Marte, Jere, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Monguno, Kaga, and numerous other local government areas in Borno state.

The situation is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by both the local communities and the Nigerian government in countering the threat posed by Boko Haram. The need for security and stability in these regions remains a pressing concern, as does the safety of the individuals who are simply trying to earn a livelihood through agriculture.
