Politicians in Anambra state without documents stating that they have paid their taxes have been threatened with arrest. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) led state government made this known on Thursday, August 9, stating that the exercise is not intended to witch-hunt other political parties as some speculate. The Anambra state government has said it will begin the arrest of political aspirants in the state who do not pay their taxes and levies.

Mr Jude Emecheta, the managing director of the state signage and advertising agency, made this announcement on August 13th. Emecheta stated that the taxes and levies aspirants should pay were on branded vehicles, placement of banners and posters. He said that contrary to popular speculations, the exercise was not a witch-hunt of any political party in the state.

He dismissed claims that it was a punitive means by the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) to deal with other political parties in view of the 2019 general polls. Emecheta said plans had been concluded to nab such politicians and seized their vehicles in order to force them to pay or prosecute them as deemed appropriate. He stated that notices were sent to political parties in the state demanding their compliance. Emecheta stated: “No vehicle has been impounded for now. We only started the sensitisation; the implementation will commence next week.

“There is no law that says APGA members not pay such taxes and levies; it cuts across all political parties in the state.”

“We will start impounding vehicles of those who refuse to pay; you can brand your vehicle without putting any pictures on it, but once your picture appears, it becomes an advert and you must pay.”

Meanwhile, The national chairman of the APGA, Victor Oye, had denied reports that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state would contest the 2019 presidential election.

He said the reports were not only fallacious, but also well-orchestrated design to pitch him against his admirers and scuttle his administration.

Oye stated that the Anambra state governor was not contesting the 2019 presidential poll because the party was targeting to win the remaining southeast states.
