YOUTHS OF TODAY AND POLITICIANS

BY Obum Osigwe.

No more values, No more independent and rational thinking between what is right and wrong once money is put on the table.

This is the bane of most youths today following one politician or the other. For the freebies they get they support blindly irrespective of how tainted the politician is.

What is the future of our nation when a youth because of monetary benefits they get from a politician loses his conscience and condemned to the very low level of sycophancy just to keep the flow going.

I’ve seen this worrying trend a lot in this upcoming elections. I wonder if people don’t reason at all.

Let’s take for example I am leaning towards the Peoples Democratic Party in this election but I’ve openly called for people not to support the Party’s candidate in Anambra South senatorial zone. How can I, in all honesty, support a man that once kidnapped the sitting governor of my state. He has no business in the Senate as far as I am concerned. I am openly supporting the APGA Candidate in Anambra state house of Assembly Nnewi-North constituency. I have a close cousin contesting in the same election in a different party.

Politics is not a family affair. It’s about what will work and who is honest enough to deliver on campaign promises.

I make bold to say that my support for candidates in an election hasn’t been about financial inducement or fringe benefits. Worrying it’s what it is today.

I laugh when these politicians demand loyalty from these youths. Are their views blinkered or what? These youths might sing your praises to high heavens as long as the money keeps flowing. The day the next politician offers more they are gone.

Principles matter more to me more than anything. I once had a boss I looked in the face and told him not to run in an election. When some youths were chanting ‘Ojebego’ I stood my ground. They were chanting not because they even believe in his ability to win that election but because they know monies will flow once the campaign starts.

Our youths today are tools in the hands of desperate politicians. This sad and unfortunate trend must end if we are to have a great nation tomorrow.

I will rather stand on my feet fighting for what is mine that kneels to beg for crumbs. We have got a great ability to move our nation forward. We must stop being tools in the hands of desperate and selfish politicians.
