NNEWI: TOTAL DISREGARD OF THE ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE BY THE STATE GOVERNMENT

By Akabogu Dorathy

The deplorable state of roads and lack of motorable and access roads to the ever-increasing population in Nnewi has remained a nightmare to residents and visitors especially during the raining season.

Nnewi Enem Hall to Awka Etiti road has been part of the story as the rain that fell yesterday denied the inhabitants of the environment access to their various houses.

The Igwe Orizu road which is tarred was also messed up from the tires of motorists who managed to come out from the road into the tarred road.

The road was awarded to a private individual under the present government.

The road was only scraped and red sand was poured on it. Since then, nothing else has been done on it. During the dry season, inhabitants suffer a lot especially those that have shops along that road due to dust emanating from the road.

The State Government must make construction and rehabilitation of roads a priority in Nnewi because the multiplicity of accessible road network remains the backbone of social and economic activities in Nnewi.

Road maintenance and repair should be done at regular intervals. Proper drainage facilities along road networks should be available.

Traffic lights should be established at major junctions in Nnewi.

The business community and the leadership of Nnewi must rise to the demand for improved road infrastructure in Nnewi from the State Government.
