HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ELECTION: POLITICIANS INDUCE NNEWI VOTERS WITH AKARA, RICE, NOODLES

Information reaching Anaedoonline.com shows that voters at Nnewi, Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State, enjoyed free food and snacks on Saturday, March 9, during the State House of Assembly election as the two main contenders in the election, the Young Progressive Party, YPP; and the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, declared free breakfast and lunch in all the polling units across the ten wards in the state constituency.

It was gathered that the free food strategy was deployed by both camps to woo voters and make them feel relaxed during the exercise; this is even as some political parties in the race also induced voters financially.

According to impeccable source, relative of one of the major contenders distributed akara (bean cake) in all the polling stations, while sponsors of one other major contender shared bags of rice and packets of noodles.

It was also gathered that money exchanged hands during the exercise at the area; but our source was not specific on who shared the money, and how much they shared.

The source said: “I don’t want to call names, but everybody is aware that a certain political party that wanted to oust APGA by all means gave huge amount of money to voters.”

In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Comrade Peter Nonso Okafor, the candidate of APGA, as winner of the Nnewi State Constituency election.

Comrade Okafor pooled a total of 13,231 votes; leaving his closest rival, Dr. Obinna Ngonadi, of the Young Progressive Party, YPP, trailing behind with 12,383 votes; just as Hon. Benchuks Nwosu of the PDP got 2,452 votes to come distant 3rd.

The Returning Officer for the election, Dr. Alapuchukwumbuikem Eugene, made the declaration at the Nnewi North Independent National Election Commission (INEC) collation center at Nnewi, in the early hours of Sunday, March 10
