Two persons were reportedly shot d*#d over the weekend in parts of Awka, Anambra State capital in a renewed cult war. Orient Daily gathered that one of the victims was shot dead by suspected rival cultists on Sunday morning at Umukwa village, Awka near Eke Awkamarket. A reliable source alleged that another victim was shot dead by cultists at Dike park on Saturday.

An eye witness told Orient Daily that they were going to church when they heard gunshots and people scampered to safety. ” We later saw the boy lying on the ground at the place where the gunshots were fired and blood all over him”, the witness who spoke on the basis of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter said.

The officer in charge of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Awkuzu, CSP Pat Agbazue, who confirmed the incident, informed the reporter that the victim was found dead from bullet wounds behind Sterling Bank and that preliminary investigations reveal that he was a victim of cult killing.

Orient Daily also gathered that a young man was shot dead in Nodu Awka, about a week ago by suspected cultists. The source claimed that there was an ongoing cult war between members of the Vikings and Black Axe confraternities.

Confirming the second killing, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed said that it was yet to be confirmed if the Dike park victim was killed by cultists. He said, “I can confirm that a young man was shot dead in Dike park on Saturday evening but it is yet to be established that the killing is cultism related. It is only the ongoing investigation that will establish this.”

Mohammed also stated that he was unaware of any cult clash ongoing in the state’s capital adding that he was going to verify the validity of the claim.

It would be recalled that several deaths have been recorded since the cult killings in Awka which witnessed a crescendo during two months ago. Though the cause of the war is not clear, speculations have it that it is a battle for supremacy.
