Anambra Plenary: Recover All Stolen Lands – Legislators Urge State Gov’t

The Anambra State assembly has urged Governor Willie Obiano to direct the commissioner for lands to commence necessary action and ensure the recovery of all government-owned lands illegally occupied by land grabbers, speculators, and private estate developers as well as take proactive measures to forestall any further reoccurrence.

The chief sponsor of the motion and Member representing Idemili North, Arthur Ifeanyi Chiekwu moved the motion and was seconded by member representing Onitsha North 1 constituency Uzoma Innocent Eli.

Hon. Chiekwu, while leading the debate said: “The state government has observed with great dismay the manner at which land speculators, land grabbers, communities, private estate developers encroach massively into government-owned lands with impunity.”

“This ugly trend of encroaching into government-owned land for personal self-interest hampers proposed socio-economic policies of the state government especially as it relates to the provision of basic social infrastructures like the construction of schools, access roads, affordable houses, health centres and so on.”

“Mindful of the fact that this encroachment by these persons who do it for self-interest negates the tenets of the land use act, which envisages that government-owned lands shall be used for overriding public interest”

Other legislators who spoke in support of the motion said,” This motion is geared towards stopping the illegal act of encroaching into Government-owned lands for personal self-interest, this illegal act hampers proposed socio-economic policies of the state”

“Ndi-Anambra should desist forthwith from all illegal acts more especially as it concerns Government lands and properties to avoid attracting the wrath of the law. Let’s all be law-abiding and do our daily businesses within the ambit of the law, that’s how to be a good citizen.” They advised.
