Umahi Admonishes Ebonyians To Put All Hands On Deck Towards Rebuilding Society

Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Umahi on Saturday counsels all and sundry to place premium value in imparting the lives of less privileged in the society with a view of accelerating the growth rate.

He opined that improving the welfare of these concerned and paying priority attention to it, would better any society and inspire a generation to right all wrongs in the society.

Umahi said this during an official launching of his wife’s pet project, “Family Succour and Upliftment Foundation” in Abakaliki.

According to him, going to the hinterland to reposition the downtrodden in the society will help in building a better society and country at large, adding that lending a helping hand to those in need is another way of safeguarding one’s future.

The Governor expressed satisfaction over the successes made in ensuring good health, education, empowerment, women liberation, a partnership among other achievements, and described the services as a display of kindness.

He commended the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund for Activity (UNFPA), for their total commitment and support of the foundation.

He also appreciated the management of the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, top government functionaries, contractors among other partners for their assistance.

The Chairman of the Occasion, Rev. Fr Abraham Nwali, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Religious and Welfare Matters noted that her Excellency increased support for women in the state, gave 40 percent inclusion of women in politics.

Speaking, The wife of Enugu State governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi urged people to make proper use of empowerment and intervention provided to the right needy.

In her words; “Reach out to the real poor people and empower them with interventions provided.”

Earlier in her address, Mrs. Umahi explaining the achievements made so far by her pet project, said that the launching was to enable the foundation to expand to meet more needs, adding that it was also to seek for more partnership, technical and financial supports.

She commended the state government and development partners for their commitment towards the vision and mission of the foundation.

“The journey started in 2015 and this is the first time it been launched.

“Our achievements were in the reduction of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), from 74.4 per cent in 2016 to less than 30 per cent in 2019.

“Also fight against all forms of violence against women and girls, more than 2000 widows receive a stipend, domestication of VAPP Law among other aids to advance social economic activities of the people.

“Also encouraging women to hold sensitive public positions, awareness on health challenges, empowerment through skills acquisition and training,” Mrs Umahi said.

The Global Executive Director of Amurt Foundation in the state, Mr. Peter sage, implored her for sustainability and continuity to reach out to more people in the society.

“It is commendable that you were able to meet those needs and I pray that your services may continue for the future,” Sage said.

Dr Kenneth Ehunzor, UNFPA representative from Calabar office said Mrs Umahi’s foundation has notable symbols and objectives to develop a society.

Mr Ibrahim Conte, UNICEF representative pledged determination for continuous support to achieve the purpose of her mandates.

The program also featured the unveiling of the Foundation’s “Documented Strategic Plan” .

Recall that the foundation, a non-profit, non-political firm, was unveiled in July 2015 and registered as apex women-led civil society organization. End.
