Enugu Correctional Inmates Tasked On Reading Culture

The National Library of Nigeria has expressed its determination to promote reading culture through the provision of good reading materials to inmates of correctional services.

The Chief Executive Officer and National Librarian, Lenrie Aina stated this in Enugu at the 2019 National Readership Promotion Campaign held at Enugu correctional service.

Speaking at this years’ readership campaign program with the theme “Reading: A Tool For Empowering The Vulnerable”, Aina described poor reading culture as a social phenomenon that cuts across all strata of the Nigerian society.

Aina, who was represented by Samuel Ekpe, said the national library will supply books that are carefully selected for the information needs of inmates at various correctional centers.

He maintained that poor reading culture poses a dangerous challenge to individuals and national development and called on relevant stakeholders to take urgent measures to address the situation.

Also, the Zonal Head, National Library of Nigeria, Racheal Neboh said there cannot be true reformation without reading and urged the inmates to embrace reading so as to be fully corrected, transformed and emancipated.
