-Ojukwu is a Legend
-Urges Gowon to give closure on the war
-Igbo presidency

Prof Kingsley Moghalu has said it’s been 50 years since the Civil War but the war has not ended because Ndigbo is still being held responsible for the war.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) who was a Guest speaker, yesterday, 4th November 2019, at the second memorial lecture for Chief Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu which held at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam(Anambra State University) spoke on the Theme: Ndigbo in contemporary Nigerian Politics: Problems, Prospects, and the way forward.
He said, “Ojukwu the legend was the product of a historical accident that met a man of courage”. He said the 1966 counter coup and the failure of Aburi Accord in 1967 resulted to Biafra.

He spoke highly of the former Military leader Yakubu Gowon but similar manner he urged the Elder statesman to step forward to give closure on the events of the war and its lessons. He said the Civil War will always be a big question at the heart of Nigeria politics and without it there will be no healing in the land. He said these events have undermined any possibility of Igbo presidency, in his words; “Igbo people have remained heavily discriminated against in Nigeria in many ways, in particular, the political terrain, there appears to be an unspoken conspiracy to prevent a person of Igbo ethnic nationality from becoming president of Nigeria”.

He further debunked the notion that the 1966 Coup is an Igbo coup. He said there was a Major Fajuyi, Major Nzeogwu, and Major Adebowale. He said the book why we struck, addressed the issue of the coup as a result of bad government. The 1966 counter coup should also not have happened, he said.

He stated that “A whole ethnic group cannot bear responsibility for some few individuals actions”. He stated that neo-Biafra movements like IPOB are a cry for equity and Justice. He said, “the unity of Nigeria is a Myth, we are a country but not a Nation”.

He said the fulfillment of a Nigerian president of Igbo descent may not happen if Ndigbo does not come together to advance their interest group. He called out the Igbo politicians in leadership whom he largely blamed for the problems in the South East and for being “self-seeking”. He said the Igbo man needs to drop the “self-seeking” attitude, invest in political outcomes.

Furthermore, he said if Nigeria has to move forward we need to address our history; “History is a tool for healing and Nation-building”. He said Ndigbo must pursue a common agenda of restructuring and selecting a visionary Nigerian from the southeast to run for president come 2023. He urged Ndigbo to encourage the Igbo culture and language both at home and abroad to create an Igbo world view.
