Doctors Stop Work As Civil Defence Officers Evade Nnewi Teaching Hospital (Photos/Video)

Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi(NAUTH) was temporarily shut down yesterday, Tuesday, January 14th, 2020, as some doctors downed tools to protest the assault of two of their colleagues who were badly beaten by a Nigerian Civil Defense Officer.

The Doctors who are in their hundreds and mostly intern Doctors are angry over their growing safety concerns at work.

Trouble started on the early hours of Tuesday morning, when a Nigeria Civil Defence Officer accompanied by his wife, brought their child who was said to be critically ill for treatment in the hospital.

According to a Staff of the hospital, who was also an eyewitness, the Doctors taking care of the patient exhibited negligence, resulting in the death of the Child.

Speaking further, he said that the development angered the patient father who was a Civil Defence Officer, resulting in the beating and assault of the two Doctors who were involved.

According to the eyewitness, when the Civil Defence Officer found out that his child was dead, he called his two colleagues, who came and locked the Children Care Unit of the Hospital, beating up the two Doctors who were assigned to the patient before his death. As if that was not enough, he called the officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Angered by the development, the Intern Doctors in a bid to protest the assault on their colleagues, decided to suspend their services and almost shut down the entire hospital.

The situation became more intense when one the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police corked his gun to disperse the protesting Doctors.

The protesting Doctors resisted the policeman and forced him to leave the hospital.

The Doctors insisted that the deceased Father who Coordinated the beating of the two Doctors must apologize by kneeling down before the Intern Doctors.

Efforts by the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anthony Igwegbe to calm the protesting Doctors failed.

Speaking to our correspondent, one of the Doctors who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that they resisted the security officers because of their repeated assault on their colleagues.

Speaking he said, “An officer of the Nigeria Civil Defence brought her child who was in a critical condition for treatment, he was told that the child had little or no chance of surviving, unfortunately, when the child died, he transferred his anger by beating up the Doctors who were assigned to treat his child””We insisted that he must apologize to the entire Doctors for his actions which he did reluctantly”

At the time of writing, the doctors were still protesting the incident.
