Anambra state house of assembly has called on the Executive Governor of the state Chief Willie Obiano to direct the commissioner for trade and commerce to as a matter of urgency reconstitute the Anambra state task force on sub-standard goods and counterfit drugs with the view to combating the massive influx of substandard goods and counterfit drugs in all markets across the state.
Obimma, opined that the undue delay in reconstituting the aforementioned Taskforce has given rise to the massive influx of substandard goods and Counterfeit drugs in our markets, an ugly trend that might lead to the closure of the concerned markets if urgent steps are not taken to correct the persistent anomaly.*
He said that the over-dependence on imported goods, lack of requisite expertise for local production and ulterior desire for excessive business profit have made Nigerian markets a dumping ground for all categories of substandard goods and adulterated drugs ranging from pharmaceutical products, mobile phones, electrical & electronic appliances, motor spare parts & lubricants, household items, building materials…
He went further to state that these fake drugs and substandard goods are purchased by unsuspecting members of the public who in turn do not derive utility from the money spent together with other attendant problems associated with the use of fake drugs and substandard goods some of which include serious medical complications in a case of consumption of fake drugs, building collapse as a result of using substandard building materials, fire outbreak from the use of fake electric cables, and other appliances.
‘Reconstituting the Anambra State Taskforce on Substandard Goods and Counterfeit Drugs will ensure that the Key Regulatory agencies are statutorily charged with the role of combating substandard Goods and Counterfeit Drugs in our dear State and are assisted with adequate information in other to get rid of Substandard goods and Counterfeit Drugs in our markets.
