No fewer than eight vandals have been apprehended for attacking Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) electricity installations within the South-East in two months.
The Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, told newsmen on Tuesday in Enugu that the vandals were apprehended and handed over to the police between the month of October and November, 2020.
According to Ezeh, this is coming on the heels of reports of vandalism of transformers from some locations within EEDC’s network in the South-East.

He, however, appealed to members of the public to be more vigilant and safeguard the power installations serving them from vandals, especially as we enter the yuletide.
Ezeh said that the company started recording reduced cases of vandalism which it had been working at sustaining.
“But, as we move into the Christmas and New Year seasons, it is pertinent that our customers are vigilant, to avoid being subjected to untold hardship by these vandals.
“We are beginning to receive reports on new cases of vandalism in our network and we do not want this to escalate.
“That is why we call on various stakeholders to work towards securing these facilities serving them,’’ he said.
The EEDC spokesman noted that vandalism had been a major challenge that negatively impacts on the company’s operations.
“There is no way we can sustain our operations, deliver quality and improved service to our customers if this situation is not brought under control.
“We commend the efforts of the various communities and their youths, government security agencies and local vigilante groups in the fight against vandalism.
“We call on our customers and the general public to join in this fight towards the eradication of the menace”, he added.
In a related development, Ikenna Uguru, a suspected vandal, was arraigned at the Magistrate Court 6, Umuahia on a two-count charge recently, for vandalizing Okwuta 300KVA 11/0.415kv Power Sub-station.

Ikenna was subsequently remanded at Afara Correctional Centre, Umuahia.
