Sunday Dare, The Minister of Youths and Sports in Nigeria has announced and declared that the federal government does not have any plan to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

This is as he vowed that the Nigerian government will stand with the youths. The Minister made the submission in a statement on Wednesday morning in which he reacted to the bill currently before the House of Representatives which seeks to scrap the NYSC scheme.

It will be recalled as earlier reported by Naija News that the bill sponsored by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante, the Member Representing Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State is ready for second reading in the House of Reps.

The lawmaker while justifying his reason for sponsoring the bill explained that current developments, devoid of sentiments do not support the continuation of the NYSC scheme.

He listed issues such as kidnappings, accidents, general insecurity, and labour exploitation of corps members by employers as some of the reasons for his position.

Dagomie-Abiante argued that the NYSC scheme has outlived its usefulness and should therefore be scrapped.

However, Dare said the government remains committed to sustaining the NYSC scheme.

He wrote: “The NYSC scheme remains one of the greatest tools for National development for our youth. The commitment of the government to sustaining the NYSC scheme remains. Dynamic Reforms and Initiatives towards current realities are ongoing. Nigeria will stand with her youth.”

Meanwhile, a former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has said that restructuring will boost the nation’s economy and end insecurity.
