President Muhammadu Buhari has until Monday to decide whether or not to sign the modified Electoral Bill into law, according to the Presidency.

Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, made a statement in response to various organisations and people accusing the president of being hesitant to sign the controversial law.

According to Adesina, the Nigerian constitution provides the president 30 days to review a bill once it is submitted by the National Assembly, meaning Buhari has until March 1st to refuse or sign it into law.

“Some interest groups are cashing in on what they see as a delay in the President signing the Electoral Bill into law to incite civil disturbance and muddle the waters,” the statement adds.

“One can only regret their lack of understanding of constitutional requirements, as the President has a 30-day window once the National Assembly has delivered the Bill to him to sign it or deny assent.”

“Any proposed law affecting the country’s election prospects should be extensively reviewed and made as close to ideal as feasible.”
