622 men and 734 women made up the 1,356 corps members that took part in the National Youth Service Corps orientation exercise in Abia State.

The camp, which was established in 2006, was in danger of being destroyed by gully erosion at the time.

The State Coordinator of the NYSC, Julius Ekeh, made an appeal for the state government’s involvement in the rehabilitation of structures and control of gully erosion in the camp in a speech shortly after the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch B Stream I orientation course, which was quietly held at Umunna Bende Local Government Area on Tuesday.

According to him, the major challenge the camp is facing is erosion menace and leaking roofs.

“This camp was built since 2006 and handed over to the NYSC in 2007. This period is enough time for a major rehabilitation work to have been done in the camp.

“For us, as a scheme, we have been trying our best in minor maintenance and repairs of the structure. However, for any meaningful thing to be achieved, government’s intervention is definitely needed,” he said.

At the event, which was presided over by the State Coordinator, who read the address of the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Muhammad Fadah, the DG urged the corps members to sustain the spirit of patriotism, hard work and resilience “which you imbibed during the Orientation Course.”
“It is my ardent hope that you will strive to meet the expectations of Nigerians by contributing towards the progress and development of our fatherland,” Fada said.
