The Labour Party has responded to charges made by the opposition that former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s backing of the LP’s Peter Obi for president was meaningless.
According to Yinusa Tanko, the spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, those who claimed as much would be startled.
He made these disclosures on Thursday during the Nigeria Leadership Series, a digital event hosted by the Africa Leadership Group, against the backdrop of the recent criticism of Obasanjo’s words. Our journalist was keeping an eye on the situation.

At the ALG gathering, Obasanjo declared that he would not be supporting Obi’s campaign or rallying other former presidents and politicians to do so.
The previous president made a point of stating that he supported Obi because he believed that he stood out from the competition in terms of character, accomplishments, vision, and physical and cerebral aptitude.
Obasanjo advised Nigerians to vote for the presidential candidate whose principles they would like their children to uphold in the future, taking a page from a preacher who asked his congregation to choose persons whose values they would like to instill in their children in a viral video.
Tanko responded to criticism of Obasanjo’s endorsement by claiming that it demonstrates his patriotism and willingness to transform the nation by ensuring that corrupt individuals do not hold positions of authority.

When asked whether Obasanjo has not taken further steps to promote his choice, Tanko said, “He has been more obedient than any other person, so anybody cannot undermine the contribution of Obasanjo. The simple fact that he is determined to take Nigeria out of the woods, he reached out. You will be surprised by the level of reaching out that Obasanjo has done. He has reached out to a lot of Nigerians and they are working very hard to ensure that Peter Obi gets all the support he needs.”
The same individuals who are attempting to downplay the significance of Obasanjo’s endorsement were also “jostling, and struggling,” before to his endorsement letter to ensure that he supported them, he added.

While reacting to the statement that Obasanjo could not win his ward for Obi at the general elections, Tanko said, “They will be so shocked with regards to winning his ward, this is somebody that connects both local and international communities. He is known for his vision, determination, doggedness, and love for Nigeria. He has spoken and the country is already shaking. If he is not that important why would his words make so much tremour nationwide, especially when he is talking to the Nigerian Youth–they appreciate and respect his words. They are ready to go.”
