Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has joined his voice to calls for a review of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira swap policy (CBN).

Governor Wike addressed President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday that the strategy does not combat corruption or vote buying as intended and has caused immense misery for Nigerians.

Governor Wike reminded President Buhari during his speech at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally in Okrika Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State, that the business of governing does not involve inflicting hardship on the people.

UPDATE: Banks To Start Over-The-Counter Payment Of New Notes

According to news reports, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes in December 2022 and set a deadline for Nigerians to replace their old notes with the new notes.

The paucity of the new notes, on the other hand, has caused grief and pain among Nigerians.

In the middle of the developments, the federal government stated that its objective was not to cause hardship for Nigerians, but rather to reduce vote buying, combat corruption, counter holders of illicit cash, and combat other vices.

However, Wike stated on Friday that the approach has little to do with tackling corruption and is instead harming the poor.

The Rivers State Governor urged the President to devise alternative methods of combating corruption.

In his words, “Mr President, I know the pressure. But please, since two of us are going at the same time, this policy has nothing to [do with trying to] fight corruption at all. It has nothing to [do with trying to] fighting politicians at all,”

“The policy aims to suffer the people who elected us to govern over them (sic). Our business is not to make the people suffer. We all know how to fight corruption; we all know how to fight politicians. This particular one does not come in at all.”
