Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the recently concluded election, has praised the party for lowering the cost of its gubernatorial nomination form.

According to media reports, the nomination forms for the off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states are now N15 million rather than N25 million.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a spokesperson for the Peter Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Committee, verified it in a series of tweets on Tuesday, saying the cost had been reduced from N25 million to N15 million.

He wrote: “After due consultation with all the relevant stakeholders in the Party, and taking into consideration the overwhelming interest of Nigerians in our Party, and the necessity to birth a new Nigeria, and in view of the prevailing high cost of things in Nigeria, in line with our avowed disposition to carry Nigerians along in what we do, the Party has decided to review the cost of nomination forms downwards for all positions taking into consideration the suggested amount of N15m for the post of Governor.

This follows Peter Obi’s recommendation that the pricing, which is comparable to what is available in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC), be decreased.

In a tweet, the former governor of Anambra State commended the party’s leadership for listening to his request and revisiting the nomination price for the governorship form.

He tweeted: “I thank the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, and the NWC for heeding to my appeal, and reviewing the nomination fee for the governorship form downwards to N15m”.
