Four individuals were charged by the Ekiti State Police Command on Thursday in two different incidents for allegedly possessing Indian hemp and forging documents.

Three other people, Onibonoje Timileyin (also 27), Bello Tumise (16), and Ahmed Olasunkanmi (also 29), were brought before an Ado Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged forgery while Lasisi Dada, 27, was charged with possessing Indian hemp.

According to the police prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, the defendant in the case of Dada, who is on trial for illegally possessing Indian hemp, committed the crime on May 12 at around 10 a.m. in Ado Ekiti.

Okunade, who alleged that the defendant had in his possession five wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, said, “The offence contravenes Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act 1966” as he asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, while his counsel, Stephen Ademuagun, urged the court to grant him bail.

In the case of Timileyin, Tumise and Olasunkanmi standing trial for alleged forgery, the prosecutor, Olumide Bamigbade, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on May 11 around 8am at the Federal Polytechnic’s Satellite Campus in Ado Ekiti.

Bamigbade alleged that the defendants conspired and forged an identity card with the signature of the Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic’s Satellite Campus, Ado Ekiti, saying, “The offence contravenes Section 374 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.”

The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

But the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.

Counsel for the first and third defendants, Gbenga Ariyibi, and lawyer for the second defendant, Ade Ademola, urged the court to grant their clients bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.
