On Saturday, May 28th 2023, the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Joseph Ugboaja was conffered with rank of Order of The Niger (OON) By President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.
Dr Joseph Ugboaja as one of the privileged recipient is recognised for his modest efforts at improvining the Health Sector of the country.
Dr. Joseph Ugboaja is an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist by training and currently the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. He is the former Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of NAUTH, Nnewi. He is also the former Director, Clinical Services, Research & Training as well as former Chairman, Taskforce on COVID-19 of the hospital.

For his hardwork and excellent proactive delivery in the health sector, Dr Ugboaja has been honoured with hundreds of awards and recognitions from the Federal and State Government, Academic Institutions, Media, Professional and Business Organisations etc.
To add to his portfolio he is the former chairman of the Total quality management system Committee, committee on laboratory Quality management system as well as the Revolving committees of the hospital including Drug revolving fund committee, Radiology revolving fund committee as well as the Laboratory Revolving fund committee.
A report has it that because he is one of the major brains on the management board of the hospital, he was made the Chairman of several board committees including Board Committee on Clinical Services Improvement & Servicom, Board Committee on Public-Private Partnership, Board Committee on Capital budget as well as Board Committee on Liaison.

One might be forced to ask, What made Dr. J Ugboaja qualified for these positions?
The genius holds Postgraduate fellowships in Obstetrics & Gynaecology of National Postgraduate Medical College, Nigeria (FMCOG), West Africa College of Surgeons (FWACS), and International College of Surgeons (FICS) and Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS).
Another question would be, how long has he been in the NAUTH management portfolios?
He joined the hospital as a resident doctor in 2005, 9 years later he joined the Hospital management in 2014 as the deputy CMAC, a position he held for 4 years and was subsequently appointed the CMAC in 2017 for the initial tenure of 2 years which ended in 2019. Following his dedication to service, he was reappointed in 2019 for the final tenure of 2 years as the CMAC of the hospital. He was appointed the the substantive Chief Medical Director of the hospital in September 2021 by President Buhari GCFR.
His tenure as the CMAC of the hospital brought a lot of innovative changes and improvement in services under the leadership of the CMD, Prof AO Igwegbe. These include the formation of the NAUTH Research Society; the Quality improvement committee; the Clinicopathologic conference series; the NAUTH Cancer Society; Laboratory Quality Management system as well as the introduction of the Annual NAUTH Scientific Conference.

When asked the kind of person Dr. Joseph is, people often say he is hungry for knowledge, smart, attentive, organized, a great leader, and a jovial person.
All these management positions make us forget that he is also a practicing doctor, he has done remarkably well as a doctor.
To improve himself he has attended several workshops, training, and conferences on Strategic leadership and healthcare management including those organized by the administrative staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) and an associate of the Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria. (IMCON). He is a strong believer in transformational leadership and also believes strongly that leaders should be altruistic, inspiring, motivational, transparent, and accountable.
As a young medical practitioner, Dr. Ugboaja’s profile is one to look up to, he has an endless reel of young doctors under his tutelage.
