Anambra: Bad Roads, Sit At Home, Insecurity Killing Our Businesses – Traders Tell Soludo

In Anambra State, traders, importers, exporters, manufacturers, and other industry leaders have bemoaned the daily decline of their companies due to crime, touting, a poor road system, and a propensity for Monday sit-at-home orders.

The company executive revealed this in their individual presentations at a company Roundtable that the State Ministry of Commerce and Industry hosted in Awka over the weekend in Anambra.

They claim that Onitsha, Ogbaru, and Nkpor axis in the state are the areas that have been most negatively impacted by hoodlum activity, such as pickpocketing, touting, and other criminal acts.

They urged the state government to help them and fix the ecological and road issues impacting the Onitsha area transport system, particularly Owerri Road and New Market to reduce traffic, revival of Onitsha seaport, as well as to assist them in reducing difficulties they are facing in Visa procession and procurement of C of O, among others.

The investors urged the government to address the security issues, install CCTVs at the entry points of Upper Iweka, Bridge Head, Borromeo, and Nkpor Junction, establish an integrated trade platform, offer incentives for more people to enter the industrial sector, and develop a contributory programme for manufacturers to have a bigger impact.

The state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, was urged by a few of the speakers, including Chief Kelvin Ucheabi of Onitsha, who deals in food and drink, and Mrs. Ada Orikaeze, to position and install security devices around markets like Upper-Iweka, Bridge Head, and Nkpor in order to stop the unpleasant situations.

In response, Governor Soludo stated that his administration has a number of initiatives planned to promote export-oriented industry, including reorganising the Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency’s (ANSIPPA) licencing procedures to make them more accessible to potential investors.

The governor added that his administration was working to reduce the processing time for obtaining a land C of O to 72 hours. He also said that the government would mark roads to help drivers distinguish between red zones and free zones, address the issue of abuses by involving traffic and revenue enforcers, and more.

Earlier, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, the state commissioner for industry, explained that the event, with the theme “From Import to Industrialization for Export,” was intended to identify the difficulties faced by manufacturers, importers, and exporters in order to address them and draw in more investors to help the state develop and achieve more growth trajectories.
