The Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, filed general claims of anomalies in the 2023 election, according to the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja.

The LP and Obi were found to have failed to identify the anomaly, the locations where the anomalies occurred, and those affected, according to Justice Abba Mohammed, who delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

The petitioners, particularly in the states of Rivers, Benue, Lagos, Taraba, Imo, and Osun, Mohammed continued, “failed to prove the suppression of voters and corrupt practises to rob them of their votes.” However, they did not identify the voting places that were affected.

The judge decided that although while Obi and LP claimed to have received the majority of valid votes cast, they were unable to show both the amount of valid votes they received and their assertion that the APC had received an excessive number of votes.

“The petitioners failed to state the number of votes affected and the number of people disenfranchised. They also failed to prove that their votes were suppressed by failing to specify the number of votes suppressed.

“The determination of election is about figures,” the court held.

The petitioners for the LP failed to identify the precise voting units where irregularities had place, thus the court also struck out numerous lines of the petition because they were general and ambiguous.
