Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation and ex-Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, has placed blame on former President Muhammadu Buhari for the deterioration of Nigeria’s security architecture due to what he views as nepotistic appointments of service chiefs.

Chidoka made these remarks during a television interview, where he expressed concern over the significant breakdown of security within the country. He believes that this situation worsened during the eight years that Buhari held power due to what he perceives as the former president’s unbalanced and favoritism-driven choices for service chiefs.

According to Chidoka, these appointments damaged the effectiveness of security agencies, and the nation may require many years to recover from this damage. However, he noted that the security crisis extends beyond Buhari’s tenure, citing a deeper problem within the country’s security agencies.

Chidoka criticized the leadership of the police, army, and the Department of State Services, asserting that these agencies are often led by individuals he described as “unintelligent.” He also drew attention to budgetary constraints, explaining that a significant portion of the police budget is allocated to salaries, leaving minimal resources for recruitment and training.

This financial imbalance, according to Chidoka, forces security personnel to seek alternative means to meet their financial needs, potentially contributing to the breakdown of security nationwide. He emphasized that the issue is not confined to the South-East geopolitical zone but affects the entire nation.

Earlier this year, Chidoka expressed strong criticism of the Buhari administration, describing it as a “disaster of unimaginable proportions.” These comments underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and strategic leadership in Nigeria’s security sector to address the escalating security challenges faced by the country.
