Massive Promotions in Nigerian Police: Over 5,700 Officers Elevated in Recent PSC Announcement

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has granted promotions to a total of 5,718 senior police officers, encompassing those in general roles and specialized areas. In a statement released by PSC’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, it was disclosed that these promotions included elevating 12 Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police, 19 Deputy Commissioners of Police to full Commissioners of Police, and 21 Assistant Commissioners of Police to Deputy Commissioners.

Additionally, 33 Chief Superintendents of Police were advanced to Assistant Commissioners, while 265 Superintendents of Police were promoted to Chief Superintendents. Further promotions included 59 Deputy Superintendents becoming Superintendents, and 4,750 Assistant Superintendents, along with an additional 146 who were previously omitted during the May 2022 promotion exercise, were promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Police.

In the specialist cadre, two Assistant Commissioners of Police, one from Airwing and the other from Forensic were promoted to Deputy Commissioners. Furthermore, 47 Chief Superintendents of Police, including 23 medical doctors and 24 veterinary doctors, achieved the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police. Within various units, 190 Superintendents of Police, encompassing Computer Infotech, Works, Workshop, Transport, Forensic, Handwriting, Ballistics, Religion, and Veterinary doctors, also received promotions. An additional 47 specialists at the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police from different units were promoted to Deputy Superintendents.

The 12 Commissioners of Police who were elevated to Assistant Inspectors General of Police include officers from various states and positions such as the Commandant of the Police Academy in Kano, the CP of Lagos State, and the CP of Niger State, among others.

Chairman of the PSC, Solomon Arase, urged the newly promoted officers to embrace a policing approach that prioritizes being people-friendly and respecting human rights.
