The famed Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin Market on Ikorodu Road have been shuttered by the Lagos State administration.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, announced the closure of the markets in a statement issued Friday morning.

He stated that the markets were sealed in a joint operation by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) to prevent indiscriminate dumping and burning of garbage.

The Commissioner stated that the markets were closed because they were filthy, and that all of the drainages in the markets were clogged with rubbish.

Wahab also bemoaned the problem of indiscriminate parking and the abandoning of trucks on major roads, which impeded traffic flow.

He said, “As I instructed, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI in a joint operation in the early hours of today (Friday, October 13) sealed up the Mile 12 International Market and Owode Onirin market along Ikorodu Road for indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse, filthy environment, blocked and littered drainages, menace of illegal and indiscriminate parking and abandonment of trucks on the major road, thereby impeding free flow of traffic.”

Remember that the state government recently closed down the famed Ladipo Auto Parts Market and others in Mushin and other parts of the state due to filth and indiscriminate dumping of garbage.
