Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister (PM), has come in Israel amid the continuing conflict between the latter and the Palestinian militant organisation Hamas.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, Sunak travelled to Israel with the goal of meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu. In view of the ongoing fighting, Sunak is expected to propose that humanitarian aid be delivered to Gaza as soon as possible.
Sunak’s arrival in Israel comes less than 24 hours after US Vice President Joe Biden visited the nation.
When he did, Biden committed $100 billion in aid to victims of the current conflict between Hamas and Israel. Sunak’s visit is part of a global effort by world leaders to keep the situation from escalating into the broader region..
“I am in Israel, a nation in grief. I grieve with you and stand with you against the evil that is terrorism. Today, and always,” Sunak wrote on X on Thursday morning.
Sunak is likely to visit other regional capitals after meeting with Netanyahu and to express his sorrow for the people slain thus far in the conflict.
“Every civilian death is a tragedy,” the prime minister had said ahead of the trip. “And too many lives have been lost following Hamas’s horrific act of terror,” he added.
Sunak was said to be preparing his first trip to Israel earlier this week, but he would not confirm his plans until Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will visit Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar in the coming days to seek support for a peaceful settlement in Israel and Gaza. The foreign secretary will press for a deal on humanitarian access to Gaza as well as the release of British hostages held by Hamas.
