In the aftermath of the identity crisis and controversies that surrounded Nigeria’s presidential elections on February 25, 2023,  Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), took to the X app formally known as Twitter to emphasize the significance of the rule of law in maintaining the credibility of leadership.

Obi shared a profound message: “IT IS NOT TITLES THAT HONOUR MEN, BUT MEN THAT HONOUR TITLES.” He pointed out that the titles held by those in power lose their meaning if they lack integrity and authenticity. The strength of these titles lies in the honor and truth that individuals bring to them.

Obi underscored the judiciary’s vital role in upholding the authenticity of titles through transparent rulings. In situations where doubts exist about the veracity of titles and the claims behind them, the judiciary plays a crucial role in protecting the public from dubious characters and identity fraud.

He highlighted the duty of an impartial judiciary in a democracy to safeguard society’s value system. The rule of law, as Obi emphasized, is the foundation of democracy and fundamental rights for all individuals. It binds society together, ensuring that citizens trust in protecting their rights by fair judges in transparent courts.

Obi noted that people turn to the courts when they believe their rights are under attack, expecting that the courts will deliver justice according to the law. However, when the fairness and transparency of the judiciary are in doubt, the rule of law faces a severe threat. When people lose faith in the judiciary’s fairness, the rule of law and democracy are endangered.

He warned that if the rule of law is compromised, governments can become subject to impunity, leading to violations of citizens’ rights. The rich and powerful can exploit this situation, trampling on the rights of ordinary citizens without consequences, potentially transforming a democracy into an autocracy.

Obi concluded by quoting US President Joe Biden, who aptly said, “For any young democracy, the most difficult but important step is burying the legacy of tyranny and establishing an economy and a government and institutions that abide by the rule of law.” In this statement, Biden underscores the critical role of the rule of law in building a just and democratic society.
