INEC Amends Candidate Lists for Bayelsa and Imo States Governorship Elections Following Court Orders

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released amended lists of candidates for the governorship elections in Bayelsa and Imo States. The updated lists, which were uploaded on the INEC website, reflect changes brought about by court orders.

In the case of Bayelsa State, the names of Timipre Sylva and his running mate, Joshua Maciver, from the All Progressives Congress (APC), were notably absent from the list. Instead, a column for their names was left blank, accompanied by remarks indicating “court order.”

For Imo State, INEC included the names of Uchechukwu Ishiodu as the governorship candidate and Ahumbe Chiazor as the running mate for the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in the state election.

The Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, signed the amended lists, explaining that these changes were made in compliance with court orders related to the nomination of candidates by political parties. These court orders were served on INEC, compelling the commission to make adjustments to the candidate lists.

In the case of Bayelsa State, a court order resulted in the omission of the APC candidate’s name, following a Federal High Court ruling that disqualified Timipre Sylva from participating in the state governorship election. The court found that Sylva’s potential election would breach the 1999 constitution, as he had previously served two terms as the governor.
