The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has revealed that crude oil thieves in the Niger Delta region have adopted a new and unconventional tactic to evade security operatives. These criminals have begun installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on trees, making it challenging for authorities to detect their illegal activities.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the NNPCL disclosed that 149 cases of oil theft were documented in the Niger Delta region within the last week. The statement highlighted several instances of illegal oil-related activities and the audacious measures employed by the oil thieves.
One such discovery was made in Osuobodo, near the Oguta naval base in Imo state, where an oil bunkering site was uncovered. Unlike traditional oil theft operations, the criminals at this camp took their activities to a new level. They had installed CCTV cameras on trees to keep watch for security operatives and had even mounted mortar launchers and defense systems in various locations to eliminate any perceived threats.
The revelation of these tactics became possible following a military operation based on information gathered during air surveillance conducted by Target Energy, Tantita Security Services, Operation Delta Safe, and the military in August.

It appears that these oil thieves are determined to continue their activities even in remote locations without electricity. They keep generators on standby to ensure the smooth operation of their camps.
The NNPCL reported discovering drums of crude oil feeding from illegal connections, bags used for storing crude, and other related equipment at the camp. Additionally, between October 14 and 20, 2023, 49 illegal connections were found in various locations in Delta State, Imo, Bayelsa, and Rivers State.
The statement also mentioned cases of pipeline vandalism, storage facilities for stolen crude, and the arrest of vehicles carrying crude oil in different locations throughout the Niger Delta. It emphasized the commitment of the NNPCL to continue the fight against crude oil theft until the issue is eradicated completely.
