France has announced its intention to return $150 million in assets stolen by General Sani Abacha and his family to Nigeria. The funds have been frozen in France since 2021. The announcement was made by the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, during her visit to Abuja.
The stolen funds will be returned to Nigeria in the form of a grant, and discussions will soon be initiated with the Nigerian government regarding the areas in which the funds will be invested to benefit the population.
France has invested over €10 billion in Nigeria over the past decade, with more than 100 French companies doing business in the country, creating over 10,000 jobs. The French government has also directly invested in Nigeria through financing from the French Development Agency (AFD).
These developments mark a positive step in repatriating stolen assets to their home countries, contributing to efforts to combat corruption and promote economic development.
