On Monday, the Court of Appeal rendered a decision supporting Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who emerged victorious in the Abia North Senatorial District election held on February 25.

The Abia State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal’s earlier ruling was maintained by the court, which was presided over by Justice Abiri.

Nnamdi Iro Orji, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, and Senator Mao Ohabunwa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, both voiced their displeasure with the tribunal’s decision.

However, the panel of justices declared the appeal to be without merit in a unanimous decision.

They insisted that Senator Kalu had met with the Act’s requirements. The judges of the appeal court also rejected the petitioners’ claims that the election was not conducted in more than 120 voting places, primarily in the zone’s Ohafia and Arochukwu local government areas.

In the hotly contested senate polls on February 25, Kalu—a two-time lawmaker and current chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialization—was proclaimed the winner with 30,805 votes against Nnamdi’s 27,540.

PDP’s Mao Ohuabunwa received 15,175 votes to finish third.
