The Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, has announced the Federal Government’s commitment to collaborating with the Cross River State Government to enhance food production and security. During a 2-day familiarization tour of the Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA), Goronyo emphasized the importance of expanding irrigable lands to boost food production, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
Goronyo stressed the need for active participation and innovation in the water resources sector to achieve food security goals. He also mentioned the performance bonds signed by ministers and permanent secretaries during a recent cabinet retreat, highlighting the government’s unwavering focus on delivering results.
Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu pledged his commitment to collaborating with the federal government to enhance food security. He informed that the state government is working diligently to eliminate open defecation in the state.
The Managing Director of CRBDA, Bassey Nkposong, explained the significance of the Songhai Model Integrated Farm, commissioned by the minister. This farm serves as a reference point for local farmers and entrepreneurs, showcasing the zero-waste concept and various agricultural activities, including poultry, crops, mushrooms, fishery, and animal husbandry.

Nkposong outlined the strategic plans of CRBDA to work with stakeholders in the River Basin to fully utilize available lands and water resources. This includes the construction of dams, irrigation facilities, boreholes, flood, and erosion control to promote socio-economic development in the catchment areas.
The minister inaugurated the CRBDA Songhai Model Integrated Farms, which encompassed various agricultural sections and a 2-kilometer road network within the authority’s headquarters.
The visit concluded with a courtesy call to the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Otu V, marking a significant step towards achieving food security in the region.
