National Assembly Establishes Ad Hoc Committee to Address Telecom Sector Challenges

In response to the pressing challenges facing the growth and development of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, the National Assembly has taken a proactive step by creating an ad hoc committee. The announcement came during a courtesy visit to the House Committee on Telecommunications by the new executive of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) in Abuja.

Hon. Peter Akpatason, the Chairman of the House Committee on Telecommunications, outlined the committee’s terms of reference. The ad hoc committee will systematically examine the numerous challenges hindering the sector’s growth, analyze them, and formulate comprehensive solutions. The goal is to resolve these challenges, benefiting the nation’s economy and addressing the aspirations of the youth seeking job opportunities.

Acknowledging ATCON’s significant contributions to the nation’s economy, including an 18% contribution to the GDP, job creation, and positive impacts on other sectors, Akpatason expressed the committee’s readiness for legislative interventions to strengthen collaboration among industry stakeholders.

The House Committee Chairman pledged to organize a Stakeholders Forum to address the challenges of the telecom sector. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The forum will focus on tackling issues such as insecurity, multiple taxation, Right of Way concerns, lack of access to funding, and eliminating obstacles hindering the sector’s progress.

To underscore the importance of the committee, Akpatason revealed that the proceedings would be chaired by the Vice Chairman, Dr. Midala Usman Balami. The committee aims to engage relevant stakeholders for their input in addressing the complex challenges faced by the telecommunications sector.

In a strategic meeting, the President of ATCON, Tony Emokpere, sought the House’s support in addressing the mounting challenges hindering the growth of the telecoms sector in the nation’s economy. The establishment of the ad hoc committee demonstrates a commitment to finding sustainable solutions for the industry’s development.
