As part of the events planned for the 2023–2024 legal year of the Court, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will appoint 58 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria on Monday, November 27, 2023, in the Supreme Court’s main courtroom.
Following a long-standing custom, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) will provide a state-of-the-judiciary address during the special court session, highlighting the accomplishments of the Nigerian judiciary overall and the Supreme Court in particular during the 2022–2023 legal year.
This was announced in a press release that Dr. Akande Festus, the Apex Court’s Director of Press and Information, released on Sunday in Abuja.
CJN Ariwoola to Swear in 23 New Federal High Court Judges
He claims that additional prominent players in the justice sector will make speeches bordering on the state of the justice sector of the country at the occasion.
Among them are the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Attorney General of the Federation, the Minister of Justice, and the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN).
Recall that the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) received 114 applications in 2023 to determine who would be awarded the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Thirteen are professors and 101 are advocates out of the total.
Following the Advocates First and Second Filtration Stages, Academic Pre-qualification, Academic Second Filtration Exercise, Independent Appeals Hearing, and Chambers Inspection Exercises, a total of 69 competent applicants were shortlisted. Of these, 57 were advocates and 12 were academics.

The LPPC identified 58 successful candidates after carrying out the designated screening and filtration exercises, which included, among other things, numerous appearances in higher courts, recommendations from Justices of the Supreme Court and Judges of superior courts, Chamber inspections, and confirmation of the candidates’ eligibility and integrity from the Nigerian Bar Association, the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and the general public.
Of the total, one is a scholar and the other 57 are advocates.
The Supreme Court’s yearly summer break began on Monday, July 24, 2023.
Even though the Court has been in session since Monday, September 18, 2023, custom dictates that the ceremonial ceremony marking the start of a new legal year be held.
