Because Yemi Cardoso has consistently failed to appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts, the committee has threatened to issue an arrest warrant for the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This statement was sent to Cardoso by Bamidele Salam, the chairman of the committee, in a letter dated February 27.

The letter made clear that the governor of the CBN has repeatedly declined invitations to participate in the inquiry into possible revenue losses through the Remita platform.

The committee stated that the panel was authorised to “summon any person in Nigeria to give evidence, produce any document in his possession and under his control” by sections 62 and 89(1) (a, b, c, and d) & (2) of the constitution.

According to the committee, it is also authorised to issue a warrant under Section 89 (1) (d) of the constitution in order to “compel the attendance of any person who, after having been summoned to attend, fails, refuses, or neglects to do so.”

Salam stressed that if Cardoso doesn’t show up for the committee meeting on March 5, an arrest warrant will be issued for him.

He further stated, “The Committee has decided to offer you one final chance to appear. You are strongly advised to take good advantage of this invitation and appear before the Committee unfailingly.
