Kaduna-based publisher Tukur Mohammed Mamu has threatened to sue Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) for designating him as a financier of terrorism.

He disputes the allegations levelled against him by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and maintains that he has been falsely linked to activities that finance terrorists.

According to the NFIU dossier, Mamu handled ransom payments over $200,000 US to help ISWAP terrorists free their prisoners from the Abuja-Kaduna train incident. This is alleged to have been Mamu’s involvement in financing terrorism.

To which Mamu’s attorney, J.J. Usman (SAN), wrote a letter dated March 25, 2024, addressed to the NFIU CEO. The letter warns that the defamatory publication must retract its publishing within seven days, warning of impending legal action if the request is not met.

He claims that the release of the Nigerian Sanctions Committee’s designation of him as a “terrorist financier,” which was approved by the Ministry, is unfair and libellous, going against the fundamental rights to natural justice.

“It is a common knowledge that the administration of criminal justice system in Nigeria is not only antithetic to, but forbids media trial in whatever guise,” he said.

The Federal Government is now trying Mamu on charges that he helped the terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train in March 2022.
