EPL: Solskjaer Speaks On Playing Ighalo, Fernandes Against Chelsea

Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has confirmed that striker Odion Ighalo is available to make his debut against Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday night at Stamford Bridge.

The United’s Deadline Day signing Odion Ighalo will go straight into the squad for the Monday Night Football clash at Chelsea, despite missing the club’s warm-weather training camp due to travel restriction concerns.

The 30-year-old completed a shock loan switch from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua at the end of January, but did not head to Spain with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The United boss said over the weekend that the club had left Ighalo in the UK as they were unsure whether he would be allowed back to return to the country, having arrived from China in the previous fortnight.

He also said that midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has a lot of attributes that the Red Devils will get used to ahead of their clash with Frank Lampard’s side, adding that he is pleased with the former Sporting Lisbon star.

“Yes, Ighalo is going to travel with us to Chelsea,” Solskjaer told Man United’s official website at the Marbella Football Centre.

“We will assess his fitness work this week, and I believe we will get him sharp and ready to face Chelsea.

“Ighalo is desperate to play, and we want to integrate him as quickly as possible.”

Speaking on Bruno Fernandes, the Norwegian added: “Fernandes is an outstanding footballer, and he is quicker than many other players in the team.

“I am pleased with his deliveries, passing, movements, and the way he is enjoying himself in the team.

“He has a lot of attributes that we are going to get used to going forward. “And I’m sure he will also get used to us too.”

The match is scheduled at 9 pm.

Lobi Stars of Makurdi stormed back to the top of the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League yesterday with 35 points after a convincing 2-1 home win over Wikki Tourists just as Mountain of Fire and Miracles, MFM, Lagos scorched Pillars 3-1 at the Agege township stadium in Lagos.

On Saturday, Plateau United played out a 0-0 with Dakkada FC in Uyo to earn 33 points which was not enough to deny Lobi Stars the NPFL top spot after yesterday’s win.

Lobi Stars who suffered a 1-0 loss at Jigawa Stars in week 18 to relinquish the top position to Plateau United ensured they picked the maximum points against Wikki as Utibe Arit and Austin Oguneye scored a goal each in the 10th and 20th minute.

NFF Will Gain More By Developing NPFL – Ifeanyi Udeze

Former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze has restated his call for the Nigeria Football Federation and the League Management Company (LMC) to fashion out a programme that would develop the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Speaking with pressmen, Udeze said investing in the NPFL would bring out the best in domestic players, which would in turn attract foreign clubs to sign lucrative contracts with the players.

He noted that when a foreign club signs a deal with a domestic player, the NFF would also benefit in the process through issuing international transfer certificates as a part of documentation process to enable the player play outside the country.

Tungoshe community, about 20km from Maiduguri last night came under attack by Boko Haram insurgents.

Villagers who called their relatives in Maiduguri said they hid in the bushes.

Ekiti Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi on Monday said the bill seeking legal backing for the Western Nigeria Security outfit code-named ‘Operation Amotekun’ initiated by the six Governors in the Southwest region would be simultaneously assented to on Friday, February 14.

Fayemi, who disclosed this while receiving proposal bill on Amotekun from Ekiti Attorney-General, Olawale Fapohunda, said the bill when enacted, will give the security outfits legal strengthen for sustainability.

The IPOB leader in a broadcast also hinted that he would not return to Nigeria for the funeral and would be monitoring events from abroad.

President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have approved the membership of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee.

The committee has twelve members and has former Interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, as the Chairman, Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a 38-year-old man, Festus Abiona, who was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations for his alleged involvement in internet fraud.

The suspect was nabbed by the EFCC, Ilorin Zonal Office, according to a statement on Monday by the EFCC acting Head, Media and Publicity, Tony Orilade.

A former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, and Senator representing Plateau South, Ignatius Longjan is dead.

Longjan died on Monday, at 75-year-old in a Turkish hospital after battling an undisclosed illness.

Suspected Boko Haram members, on Sunday killed no fewer than 30 people, majorly late travellers in a Borno village.

Villagers said the victims arrived at the military checkpoint leading into Maiduguri after the 5pm closure of the gate and had no choice but to sleep in Auno, the neighbouring village on the Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway.

It seem Monaco FC might appoint Leonard Jardim head coach again.

Jardim was fired by Monaco just over a year since he was previously sent packing. To general surprise the 45-year-old was reappointed in January, just three months after he was sacked and replaced by Thierry Henry, who oversaw a disastrous tenure.

Jardim found himself again facing mounting scrutiny in his second spell after a humbling home defeat by Lille in the French League Cup in mid-December.

In their next match however Monaco thrashed the same opposition 5-1 in the league.

The Portuguese landed himself in the spotlight in September as Monaco picked up just three points from their opening six games despite a summer outlay of 135 million euros ($150 million).

Five wins in six helped douse the flames but the abject display against Lille stoked fresh concerns about the direction the club, currently in seventh in Ligue 1, was heading.

In happier days Jardim led Monaco to the French title and a Champions League semi-final in 2017, before the club’s Russian owners cashed in.

They sold Kylian Mbappe to Paris Saint-Germain, Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City, Fabinho to Liverpool, Thomas Lemar to Atletico Madrid, Djibril Sidibe to Everton and Falcao to Galatasaray.

A sizable section of Manchester United fans believe the club drifts aimlessly, their board clueless and behind the times.

They question ownership, investment, transfer policies, tactics and managerial choices. When you look at other clubs, however, the Red Devils begin to look par for the course.

A similar wave of unrest and dissent exists at Barcelona. As the club issues bonds to manage debt, supporters want to know where all the money went, who’s making transfer policy and why the club no longer plays with the technical brilliance and control of years past. Then there’s Monaco. When chairman Dmitry Rybolovlev isn’t tinkering with the club, he’s meddling in politics and speculating on art and real estate.

A Twitter search including his name contains more than enough intrigue and sensationalism to keep the tabloids in business until aliens invade.

France and the Monaco Royal Family arrested him for corruption. Two justice officials were removed from his case, one for accepting bribes, the other by Prince Albert himself for inexplicably refusing to extend the French prosecutor’s stay in the principality.

Rybolovlev sued Sotheby’s for allegedly conspiring with a dealer to overcharge him by $1 billion for artworks purchased. He made nearly four times his investment on a portrait of Christ painted by Da Vinci by selling it to Mohammed bin Salman for $450 million. The Saudi Crown Prince then allegedly misplaced it.

The Monaco chairman also finds himself mired in the political turmoil surrounding Donald Trump after purchasing a Florida property from the billionaire, before his presidency, for twice its market value. Both the painting and the land deal raised questions of money laundering but the Russian subsequently demolished the dilapidated mansion on the Florida property, divided the land into three plots and made approximately $20 million on their sales.

His connections to Trump didn’t end with one business transaction. During the 2016 Presidential election, Rybolovlev’s jet seemed to shadow Trump on the campaign trail. During his presidency, it was in Rome when US Attorney General William Barr made an unscheduled trip to the Eternal City on undisclosed business.

Chelsea have made the biggest transfer profit of all clubs across Europe’s top five divisions this season, according to a new report.

Figures from the CIES Football Observatory report into spending over the past two windows show that the Blues had an impressive net spend of €205million (£173.7m), largely thanks to their transfer ban and the sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

The west Londoners were prevented from signing anyone in the summer window and, despite having their ban reduced, did not bring any new faces in last month.

The only deal Chelsea completed across the previous two windows was making the loan signing of Mateo Kovacic permanent for just shy of £38million, as per their agreement with Real Madrid arranged before the transfer ban.

The Spanish giants signed Hazard from the Blues for a fee of €100million plus add-ons and have the worst net spend of any club in Europe’s top five divisions at -€181million, shortly followed by Premier League newcomers Aston Villa at -€169m after forking out €172m following their promotion from the Championship and across January.

Real Madrid are joined in the top ten of worst net spends by Manchester United (-€151m) and Tottenham (-€141m) while Arsenal were in 11th with a net spend of -€85m.

Premier League clubs had a net spend of -€844m (-£715m) collectively.

Laliga: Zidane Lauds Gareth Bale On His Current Form

The man of the hour, Gareth Bale, was a subject of much discussion before, during, and after the win against Osasuna on Sunday.

Jonathan Barnett had a long interview with AS before the match, where he spoke about Bale’s relationship with Zidane (stating that it’s more than fine).

Lost in the shuffle in that lengthy interview: Barnett’s claim that Bale is worried about his past injuries, and that he may not be able to train as hard as normal footballers because of it.

Against Osasuna, it was clear Bale was hesitant going into 50 / 50 challenges, and his play suffered as a result.

As a random aside, this was also something funny from that interview that no one seemed to talk about:

Zidane spoke about Bale after the win, and had the Welshman’s back.

“I’m pleased with his performance and he gave it his all defensively and in attack,” Zidane said. “He came off because he lacked a bit physically at the end. He’ll give us an awful lot before the end of the season and we’ll be using him”.

Whatever went on with Bale in the club last summer may have taken a backseat in what seems to be a healed relationship. Even amid the “Wales. Golf. Madrid” controversy, the club and players defended Gareth.

Zidane seems intent on unearthing the old Bale as the team will need his peak heading into a difficult stretch of the season.

Zidane also spoke about the need to be patient with Hazard’s return:

“Today wasn’t the right time. We’ll see this week,” Zidane said of Hazard’s return. “He’ll need it because it’s a long week ahead and I hope we can see him back next week”.

Mourinho Explains The Real Reason For His Bayern Visit

Bayern hosted Leipzig in a top-of-the-Bundesliga clash at the Allianz Arena, and Mourinho was a notable observer in the stands.

The match finished in a goalless draw with both sides missing guilt-edged chances to take all three points.

Next week, attention will turn to the Champions League where Mourinho’s Tottenham will face Julian Nagelsmann at home in the first leg.

Leipzig have a number of players who have been linked with the Premier League in Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg and Dayot Upamecano.

And speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Mourinho said the aim of his trip to Munich was to spot things he may not see on TV or video clips.

“It’s very important. I can see small details. Even the warm-ups,” Mourinho said.

“I can see what TV and video don’t give me. To see the warm-ups and to see what the players do individually,” he said.

“Some skills that sometimes during the game are hidden. It’s a different intensity. It’s a different experience. I couldn’t miss the opportunity.”

Spurs are currently on their winter break and return to action on Sunday with a trip to relegation-threatened Aston Villa.

Mourinho’s men are four points off fourth-placed Chelsea, and the Portuguese coach says he hopes his players return rejuvenated for a busy final third of the season.

He said: “The players needed some days off. For their body and soul they needed a rest. But not for me.

“I think the best way to try and help the team is to work.

Romelu Lukaku has taken aim at Zlatan Ibrahimovic following Inter Milan’s dramatic derby victory over fierce rivals AC Milan.

The Belgian striker rounded off the scoring in Inter’s 4-2 comeback win over their bitter rivals, which sent them top of Serie A

Ibrahimovic, who returned to Milan in December on a free transfer, had earlier inspired the Rossoneri into a 2-0 half-time lead at San Siro.

Another new arrival, Ante Rebic, had put Milan in front before Ibrahimovic doubled the advantage, and at that point Inter looked set to miss the chance to leapfrog Juventus at the summit.

However, Antonio Conte’s side hit back in the second half, with goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Matias Vecino, Stefan de Vrij and Lukaku completing the fightback.

And after the game, in a post seemingly directed at his former Manchester teammate – whose much-vaunted return last month was mooted as ‘return of the king’ – Lukaku made his point clear.

Taking to social media, the Belgian hitman succinctly declared: “There’s a new king in town”.

Lukaku, since joining the club at the start of the campaign, has scored 17 league goals as they chase a first Scudetto since 2010, and look to bring Juventus’ domination of the Italian championship to an end.

Lukaku reporters: “We did really well during the second half. They played well during the first half, as we left them too much space and we struggled.

“However, we came out well after the interval. We completed the comeback and we’re delighted with the win.

“I think that everyone has seen this team’s mentality, we never give up and we’re always looking to win.

“I’m here to win and my only aim is to help the team get results.

Meanwhile, defender De Vrij told Inter TV: “The coach made us understand what he wanted and where to improve during the break, fortunately we scored two goals in quick succession and we were back in the game. We won.

“It’s tight in the table so we have to continue like this and win our games. We’ll start focusing on Napoli now because it won’t be an easy game on Wednesday.”

The postponement of the match according to a statement by Manchester City is said to be as a result of bad weather.

“This decision has been made by Manchester City’s Safety Officer following consultation with Club stakeholders and officials at West Ham United.
