At the World Trade Organization’s General Council, the African Group made a motion to re-elect Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the organization’s Director-General.
Adebayo Thomas, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, made this announcement in an Abuja statement.
According to Thomas, the suggestion is that members take Okonjo-Iweala under consideration to run for the position of chief executive officer of the company again.

As per his statement, the idea aimed to facilitate the General Council Chairman in initiating the director-general appointment procedure at the earliest opportunity.
At the GC, he cited Amb. Abdulhamid Adamu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, who stated that there was discussion among the members over the matter.
“And all members pointed to all the efforts and qualities of Okonjo-Iweala and her contributions to the organization which enhanced a lot of progress and development.
“They all affirmed that she deserves to be reappointed as the director-general.
“All the members in the meeting from all regions that took the floor, almost 58 members supported the proposal,” he said.

He added that the General Council Chair should begin consultations on the selection process as soon as the council gives its approval. This was the resolution made by the members.
In response, Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude to everyone participant and promised to reply as soon as possible with her acceptance after speaking with her family.
