ASUU, FG MEETING HITS DEADLOCK; STRIKE CONTINUES

The meeting between delegates of the Nigerian Government and lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday was deadlocked as the meeting ended without resolution of the nationwide strike by the lecturers.

The striking university lecturers had a closed-door meeting with The Minister Of Labour And Employment, Chris Ngige, almost two weeks after several efforts to resolve the issues that led to the strike with the Minister of Education failed.

At the end of the meeting on Thursday, no conclusion was reached as the Minister of Labour and Employment told journalists that government’s discussion with ASUU will continue next week.

The lecturers insisted that the industrial action embarked upon by its members will continue.

Ngige, who led the Federal Government’s delegation said he is optimistic that the resumed discussions will lead to the suspension of the industrial action.

However, the striking lecturers believe that the outcome of the next meeting, to be attended by the Education Minister in attendance, will determine their decision.

The university lecturers have been on strike since November 4, 2018, over non-payment of earned allowance and other welfare issues.

According to them, the strike is meant to express grievance over certain unimplemented areas in the 2017 MoA, which they said suggested the Federal Government’s insincerity to the demands by the lecturers.
