As the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu continues to undergo a major upgrade, report circulating around the State has fingered the host community of trying to extort N500m from the contractors in charge of the project.
However, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chidi Aroh, the state government has rubbished the news, describing it as “false, malicious and baseless”. The commissioner reiterated the commitment of the State government in making sure that the airport renovation is finished on time and slammed those spreading falsehood around the State.
“The state government has not received any complaint from the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) or the contractors handling the all-important project”. Aroh said.
The commissioner went further to reveal that “it is a well-known fact, which indeed has been publicly acknowledged severally by both the Hon. Minister of Aviation and the Management of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) that the Enugu State Government has provided all the required support in respect of the upgrading of the Akanu Ibiam International Aiport, Enugu”.
Aroh disclosed that the state government in furtherance of its commitment to the upgrading and timely re-opening of the Enugu airport, during the first meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO) in 2020, held on January 8, “approved the request of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) made on its behalf by the Managing Director, Captain Rabiu Yadudu, for the issuance of a composite Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) for the entire land area of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu”.
Recall that on November 8, 2019, the minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika stated that the federal government approved the overhaul of existing facilities at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

“I want to assure you that this procurement of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport reconstruction, rehabilitation of the runway and other associated works will be delivered prudently in the interest of all,”
“When completed, the airport is going to be one of the best and most modern airports in Nigeria.” he said.
The company in charge of the airport renovation is PW Construction Company and they are expected to carry out a total renovation and reconstruction of facilities at the airport.
